"Residual feelings" are feelings of guilt experienced by Kahm that would prevent him from going about his everyday life. Kahm would usually seek to offset residuals by trying to make "something good come out of something bad". Typical examples of this would be asking his parents for money when he otherwise wouldn't have, saying to himself "I wouldn't now have this money if not for the bad thing that happened, so it was really a good thing because something better came of it".
